In memory of the 343 FDNY firefighters that lost their lives on September 2011, Robert participated in a memorial stair climb. Hundreds of firefighters from around Virginia came to Richmond to climb 22 flights of stairs five times to represent the 110 floors of the Twin Towers.

Ladder trucks from Richmond and Henrico flew the US flag.

I was able to volunteer and was honored to support the climbers as they came by the 17th floor. Sweaty, fatigued, and determined, they were an inspiration.

Shocking

We have always had a lovely Bradford Pear tree in front of our house. You may recall it from a number of snow photos - http://yarnandpaper.blogspot.com/2010/02/from-last-snow.html.

Recently it suffered the loss of a big limb. Given its age and the life span of the average Bradford Pear, we had to call in reinforcements.

Big reinforcements.

And while the crew was were here, some less desirable hollies had to go too.

It's all shocking. I know. I'm at a bit of a loss for words myself.

Robert's trip to Texas

Back in March, Robert made a solo visit to Texas to visit the p's. As you can imagine, it involved a great deal of food and fun.

Way earlier this fall, we had some fun adventures! Robert's parents came for a visit from Texas. We did plenty of traveling around including a visit to Williamsburg on lovely, chilly fall day.

Robert ran the Philadelphia Marathon in November. At the start line, they collect clothes discarded by the runners. These are some of the 100+ bags they filled.

I love looking at other folks' before and after pics. However, I always forget to photo the before and/or progress. Finally I remembered! At least in time to have the husband photo because I'd already left for work.

We had new vinyl installed in both upstairs bathrooms (but you only get one bathroom before shot).

Folk Festival

What a fabulous day for a festival! Dad and I got our annual bluegrass fix, blues fix and gypsy guitar fix (yeah, I didn't know I needed a gypsy guitar fix either, but I got it).

And I got plenty of knitting done along with compliments from a few fellow knitters who didn't think to bring a project. Dad's modeling the project.

Last Christmas, my dear friend Roz gave me a charming knitted beet. Little Sallie loves it. A new friend in the house, Javi loves it too. In order to minimize competition between the animals, Roz kindly gave Javi some knitted cherries. He loves them!

We just returned from a fun weekend up north. Robert's favorite soccer team, the Tottenham Hotspurs, played (and won!) a friendly match with the New York Red Bulls. So to NYC we went. Actually, Harrison, New Jersey.

Some Finnish finished objects!

Well, not all Finnish. This is the unblocked Lace Leaf Shawl that was the project of the lace class I taught this summer at the Yarn Lounge. It's a great project.

Here is the blocked version. The stitch definition is much better.

These are Finnish socks - Finnish yarn and a Finnish river pattern - the designer writes "Kalajoki socks reflect the Kalajoki river which winds its way through Finland and empties into the Baltic Sea." The yarn is from Leena with Riihivilla. I bought it on our trip to Helsinki. I love the right and left socks!These mittens are also yarn by Leena; the pattern is writtern by her mother. The yarn is fabulous and the pattern is delightful. One is a wee bit bigger than the other (oops!), but I love them. Love them.

Yes, I'm still not able to negotiate the new blogger very well. Blast.

Okay, let's see if I'm better at managing Blogger today. It got the best of me last round.

So, we're on our way to Pittsburgh! Views from Mount Washington (I think).

We had dinner at a fabulous sandwich joint.

I highly recommend pepperoni and a fried egg on a pre-race sandwich.

Our Parkersburg adventure!

Robert and I had a fabulous adventure traveling through western Virginia, West Virginia, a bit of Ohio, and Pennsylvania this weekend. All on the quest for food with the excuse of a half-marathon - for him, not for me. I'm the support team.

We drove through lovely mountains - Monterey, the Tygart Valley, Elkins - on our way to Parkersburg, WV. We stayed at the beautiful, historic Blennerhassett Hotel.

During our initial walk through town, in what seems to be the continuing trend, we stumbled across heavy equipment within minutes.

Pretty nice heavy equipment.

I discovered Market Street Yarn and Crafts with an impressive inventory, some of which needed to come to my house.

A knitting update -

I'm making a fabulous turtleneck sweater - yes, I know my timing is a little off given the temps today. I'm a bit more than halfway done with the front, all done with the back. Sleeves to go!

The front has a pretty lace and cable pattern.

The color is a lovely light teal that does not show well on camera.

Next project (this will be for next winter)

So, how was my day? I did lots. I did not complete everything on my to do list - I never have. I always overlist myself and am thrilled when I at least finish half.

I paid some bills and wrote some notes. I love writing notes. And I'm diminishing the stash of old stamps I have. Blasted rate increases.

I cut grass.

I went to the pool (no swimsuit photos. Sorry.).

I made a big ol' mess in the kitchen.

I made a moderate mess in my office.

I knit and watched pre-recorded television shows. A requisite nap ensued. It is Sunday afternoon.

I finished the scrapbook from vacation a year ago June.

It's big and loaded with lovely photos and memories.

I cleaned up the kitchen.

I'm settling down.

I have a whole unplanned day. Well, sort of unplanned. And sort of whole.

All of my usual weekend commitments are otherwise occupied: the parents are out of town, the YL is closed for the day, and the husband is working.

I went to church, I'm waiting until an appropriate hour to fire up the mower, then I have hours of my own until some friend(s) are coming over this evening to visit and knit.

We'll see what the day brings!

I just can't help myself

Yesterday at the Yarn Lounge, I had a conversation with similarly-minded paper lovers. We all admitted that we buy lovely paper - wrapping paper, stationery, notepads and such - then cannot part with it. I have stationery and postcards that I've bought on vacation - one of a kind - and I cannot bear to send any of them. If I buy a whole box, I may send a few notes, but hoard the rest when the supply gets low. My husband regularly stumbles across cards from vacations years ago and asks me if I'm going to send the cards. Well of course not! What a silly thought! I only have one of each design - I must keep them all.

One knitter had an interesting perspective - give away so you can receive more. She put it more eloquently, but that's as poetic as I can remember. An intriguing concept, and I certainly like the idea of getting more, but - gasp - I'm not sure I'm ready to part with my lovely papers.

I know it is wrong on many levels - I'm selfish, I'm obsessed with material things, I'm unwilling to share beautiful things with other folks even if a special card may brighten their day (isn't is really just the spirit of the note that brightens one's day - even if it is on some mass produced stationery?). My rationalization is weak, but my power to release is even weaker.

Finished and started again!

I finished my Crabapple Blossom (I love that name!) linen sweater. The pattern is my own design, sort of, from the Handy Sweater Book of Patterns from the Yarn Lounge. An educational and rewarding effort.

I "found" the Granny Smith-colored buttons in the vintage button jar at the Lounge. High contrast and fun. I love them.

I've started my next project - a cabled vest made from yarn I bought in Helsinki last summer. I'm very fond of it already. And since it is wool, the pressure is off to have it ready for wearing this season. Whew.

Unbelievable friends

I went on a spectacular vacation with my longest, dearest friends. We stayed here.

We ate out lots.

We enjoyed moments together.

We enjoyed moments of solitude.

And watched the most majestic pelicans glide by.

I can hardly express the sheer joy of spending four days with dear friends, having a collection of compadres to play with all the time, and having no more pressing plans than to stroll on the beach or take a nap. Joy.

Hobbled

I thought I was hobbled. I had to wear this shoe for four weeks.

I had a follow up appointment with the MD today. Now I really am hobbled.

Just to add insult to injury, by a special alignment of the planets, I had Robert's truck for the day (a rare treat that happens about annually) and had plans for a splurge excursion to Trader Joe's. Let's just say that errands are not nearly as much fun in 90 degree heat while struggling to get a bootie off/on in order to drive/walk.

I may have to set up a special fund to have the house repainted after I whack the bootie against every flat surface.

New project

I'm jumping ahead chronologically to tell you about my newly started project - a linen sweater. The enablers at the Yarn Lounge helped me through (and continue to) my indecisiveness. I committed to a yarn and color - Crabapple Blossom - how fun is that!:

I get (read: have) to select the edging, button band, style, sleeve length. It's a big job. I've been swatching, measuring, and have started both the body and a sleeve. See how indecisive?

Hopefully it will be lovely. In any case, it will be well worn.

The journey to Texas

Oh, way back in April, we embarked on a driving trip to Texas. A little nervous about that much time in the truck together.

We stopped at the Loveless Cafe just outside of Nashville for a late lunch. A delightful oasis on the highway desert.

Yum.

The next stop was Texarkana.

Just in case you forget where you are.

The state line between Texas and Arkansas runs down of the center of the street in town. True story. The businesses on one side are in Arkansas; the other side, Texas.

The Big Birthday

I was not eager to turn 40. I've never had an issue with significant birthdays, but I was not looking forward to this one. Well, I'm still not thrilled to be 40, but boy, did I have a significant birthday!

My birthday fell on Tuesday, so the celebration started on Monday with a birthday lunch with a co-worker. Tuesday brought another birthday lunch then a fabulous dinner with friends, organized by a special friend. Unfortunately, I did not get photos of the event, but I did take photos of the lovely handmade cards they brought.

A clever favorite:

On Thursday, I had lunch and dinner with my parents. Another delightful celebration.

On Saturday, I received an extra special treat! I was minding the store as I was supposed to be doing (only after squabbling with a co-worker that she should just go to the French Film Festival as she had planned - we could handle things without her. She was frustratingly resistive.) In walked my dear college sorority sisters! With six children and a retail shop between them and living in-and out-of town, they do not usually show up unannounced. After a moment of stunned confusion (I was 40 and a few days by then - a little slower on the thinkin'), I realized they were there to see me (not being knitters and all)! We had a fun afternoon roaming Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.

We followed our tour with dinner at Cous Cous with some yummy strawberry wine concoction. They stayed overnight at our house (my clever scheming husband had wisely tidied the house before going to work in the morning).

So many goings on

A little sunshine today brought out my desire for photo-taking.

Here are the finished Nordic mittens. I love them! They were quite bumpy due to my limited experience with fair isle knitting. They smoothed out quite a bit during the first few wears. Maybe more if/when I block them.

I've started two new projects:

One is the Miralda Shawl from Knitted Lace of Estonia. I'm making it of yarn I bought in Tallinn, Estonia last year. I couldn't read the ball band - in Estonian and all - so I e-mailed a copy to Nancy Bush. She e-mailed me back!!!! I love knitters and the sharing spirit.

I love the way it is transitioning from tan to off-white to pink. I love the long colorways.

The other new project is the cover project on the latest Interweave Knits in Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece in Malibu Blue. I'm between pattern sizes - based on my experience with gauge, I'm hoping it comes out perfectly sized. I've got pretty good odds.

P.S. Good luck to my favorite runner taking on the National Marathon this weekend. Goooooo Robert!

What fun!!! About eight inches of snowy bliss descended on us yesterday afternoon through this morning. A few photos from inside the cozy house.

The daughter of the Yarn Harlot answered my question: See "Excuse the seventh." Her daughter, Sam, apparently identified me as a knitter from a distance wearing grey bobbles, pink lace, and brown cables.

With my own lack of a hip-and-trendy teenager to query regularly, I seek out others who may be hip-and-trendy. I'll take Sam for now. My current projects in progress nor stash support her recommendation, but I'll take it under advisement.

How many is too many?

I went out for my daily knitting walk around the Capitol today. I was quite chilly yesterday and had to pop inside to warm up, so today, I bundled more appropriately. However, as I ventured out, I pondered if I could be too hand-knitted? I inventoried my current hand-knit coverings and rationale:

Bobble hat - essential for under 30 degrees. Okay.
Fingerless mittens - essential for outside winter knitting. Okay.
Lacy scarf - maybe not critical, but the breeze in a cotton turtleneck yestderday left me a bit chilled. Okay.
Icelandic sweater (the version I knit) - it's the core of today's outfit. Okay.
Socks - I specifically chose knit wool socks over thinner storebought ones today. Okay.
Socks - knitting project in progress. Does it count? That's the reason for going outdoors. Okay.

Well, I certainly seemed justified in my draping of handknits. But still I wonder, how much is too much?

One would think that I would still be basking in the Thanksgiving through New Year's holiday glow. But no, a total of 11 vacation and holidays (give or take) in the past eight weeks isn't enough. I am SO looking forward to a four-day holiday weekend! I have plans to stamp, knit, work out, cook, loaf, nap - oh the possibilities!

A visit to Helsinki

In this week's Knitter's Review, the author reviewed, with glowing remarks, yarn from a hand-dyer in Helsinki. I found out about her from Stewart, the owner of The Yarn Lounge, just prior to our visit to Helsinki last summer. I had the joy to meet Leena and pick out yarn and a mitten kit in person at her booth.

Her mother writes the mitten patterns. They are pre-boxed, but I was able to swap out the yarn to make my own color creation.

Mittens - take two

We're rejuvenating a mitten knit-along! Also known as a mitt-along. I tried once before with limited results. I recently solicited a lesson on wrapping floats from the experts at The Yarn Lounge Man, they know their stuff! Amazing how utilizing correct, or at least more efficient, techniques can make knitting so much easier. They are coming along much better this time. Still a bit bumpy. Definitely pink.

I'm keeping the project in my lovely silk Lantern Moon bag from The Yarn Lounge. It's sumptuous.

It's even more lovely in person. An indescribable, iridescent purple.

I'm also working on socks from the new Interweave Knits. Also progressing pretty well.

I this will be a good lunchtime walking project - a simple (as long as one pays attention) two row repeat, with a fine, distinct pattern.

Farm fresh eggs

Some things change over the years so slowly that I don't notice. Recently I had an organic banana. I had a huge flashback to my childhood and the realization - THIS is what a banana is supposed to taste like! I had no idea they had become bland and sort of chemically over the years.

Today I had fresh eggs. Not ones purchased recently from the store, but real fresh eggs. From free range chickens who munch on pumpkin rinds, flowers, bugs, grass, corn - all sorts of good things. Happy ones who get hugs and have Christmas stockings. Those scrambled eggs flooded me with childhood memories of early breakfast at my parents' house. How familiar was the taste. That's what eggs are supposed to taste like.

A new craft room!

We have a junk room. Since we moved in, it's been filled with stuff that won't fit in the tiny closets in the house, but necessities that need to be nearby. Ironing board, pile of clothes to be ironed, luggage, drying tower, and stuff. Just stuff.

Recently we've tidied it up a bit. Put up some prints that didn't have a spot anywhere else in the house. I moved my yarn stash downstairs and collected all of my stamping and paper goods to put in there. I want to learn to sew on my neglected sewing machine of 15 years. So, I needed a table for crafts. Making cards, scrapbooking, and sewing. I have a fabulous desk downstairs for writing notes and doing home-officey things. This table will be for crafting. (I stamped some cards on the ironing board yesterday - not quite right...)

The perfect table came into our house in two boxes and two plastic bags late last night. I became a bit overwhelmed when I realized I bought something with drawers. I love drawers, but have never assembled drawers. And I was home alone with a half-charged battery drill. And the pieces.

So many pieces.

So I started. Here I am at step 10 of 24.

I called in reinforcements at step 15, skeptical as they were.

I like the self reliance that comes with assembly. I like it even more when it goes smoothly. I may never buy anything to be assembled from anywhere but Ikea again. Love the Swedes. The assembly flowed more smoothly than I could have ever dreamed. Aside from the half-charged battery drill for which I suppose I cannot hold them responsible.

Here is the completed table minus one leg - still waiting on full power on the drill.

Now the junk room is officially the craft room!

Christmas is coming!!!

Boy, the activity going on! Christmas knitting for friends and family.

I'm having a tough time gifting these socks! These are made from yarn bought in Sweden last year. My first, and only, short row heel to date.

This yarn is Cascade sock yarn. I loved knitting with it. Soft, squishy, lovely colorway. The pattern is River Rapids - I thought appropriate for the yarn. The recipient may think she's getting plain stockinette socks - I hope she likes these!!!

These are made from Finnish yarn bought this summer. When you say purple is your favorite color, you better mean it!

I am happily - well, slowly - working on a charming vest for myself. It's Honeycomb made of Rowan Felted Tweed. Here's the back and the front.

While I'm writing and knitting, I'm listening to Corb Lund. We went to see him for the second time last Saturday. A great singer/songwriter.

And I'm getting some help from Gertie on a project for a very special someone. She's an eager learner.

She's doing well.

Well, maybe struggling a bit.

Robert and I tackled the Ntelos 8k and Half Marathon yesterday! We happily met our goals - mine a speedy (ha!) 48.27 for the 8k and him a zippy (really) 1:46:40.

I'm ready to register for next year's half now!

Wow, I even startled myself that my last post was September 1. Shameful. Clearly, I get so much enjoyment from reading other folks' blogs, I save little to no time for mine. I'll go with that.

One thing I have been doing - knitting dishrags! Several old storebought dishrags had reached their ratty peaks and had to move out of the kitchen. The current stock was low. Way low. So, in an unusual knitting request, my husband asked me if I could make more; he really likes the hand knit ones. Well, who can turn down such a request??? So, here we go:

Okay, now I know why I haven't posted in a while. A good, entertaining post includes a photo. My new camera and my computer do have a difficult relationship.

Buc-ee's!

In the little town of Luling, Texas - home of the Watermelon Thump -

is the greatest of all convenience stores: Buc-ee's.

We were enthralled with the store for hours! There's good shopping in there! Prints, clothes,

weathervanes,

other outdoor stuff - feed 'n seed and such,

housewares - including a Texas-shaped waffle maker, Montana Silversmith jewelry, hats, flops, and food, food, food! I couldn't capture it all in photos - lots of Buc-ee's branded goodies - syrup, preserves, jerky, trail mix (about a dozen kinds!), popcorn. Also a bakery loaded with kolaches, scones, cookies, danishes. Plus salsas, bread mixes, barbeque sauce. Loads. Really.

We met the buyer who was spectacularly nice and helpful.

Lunch at a local favorite - Chris Madrids. These macho nachos are the best. Ever. A trip to the most beloved landmark of Texas history - The Alamo. The requisite shot in front of the Alamo.

Boy, are we having a time! I regularly forget to take photos while out adventuring, so imagine my delight when I found 77 on the camera! Get ready!!!

A little travel

I travel about two days a year with work. Today is one of them. Not such a bad deal - it was a lovely day to drive, I had a new book-on-tape, I got out of the office early, and I got to eat on the company tab. I have been to Virginia Beach a few times on business and knew exactly where I was going for supper. I sat by myself, knitted a couple of rows, sent an "arrived safely" e-mail to my concerned husband. I had a glass of wine and the best crabcakes ever. I'm looking forward to a repeat tomorrow for lunch before returning home. Maybe sans the wine.

The downside - the hotel is a bit dumpy and I sleep crappy in hotel rooms when I'm alone.

Although I'm enjoying a little downtime this evening, I have an unusually hectic August. I need to enjoy these quiet moments. I am a little too wound up for my own good right now. A few open items that I cannot quite get to close. Some projects and to-do items at home, at work, at church - a few here and there add up to a lot. A lot freaks me out.

I'll keep plowing through the to-do list and hopefully calm down a bit prior to vacation next week. And the main goal is to stay relaxed through the vacation.

After a bothersome early week at work, I'm on the downhill slide. Whew!

Today, a lovely half-day Thursday. Love those! A telework morning - what's not to love about that? - and a sunny afternoon to myself. I so enjoy spending the afternoon with my handsome husband, but free afternoons have a different feel. I went for a swim, had a visit with the new minister at church, made a quick and yummy stop by Dairy Queen, then loaded up on fresh produce at Tom Leonard's. This evening I'm knitting with a friend. How to beat all that??

Here is yarn from Finland. Not sure what it's going to be yet. I'm thinking a cardigan.

From Estonia - this yarn has a smell that I cannot quite identify, but I like. Organic let's say.

I borrowed a swift and ball winder from a friend to wind my bounty of yarn. I had a little help.

The swift offered a little extra tension that I could not figure out how to adjust. Here are two cakes of the wound yarn. The smaller is the first winding - it was more bricklike than cakelike. I rewound and got the much bigger, fluffier version. Amazing. Same yardage.

Here is a square I made for a community afghan for the owner of the Yarn Lounge for her upcoming wedding. The yarn is a yummy merino wool from the charity bin at the Lounge. The owner has designated a suitcase where you can donate leftover yarn - perhaps an extra ball or so from a finished project. Takers contribute to a fund that will go to a local animal shelter. Given her passion for animals, I thought this was particularly appropriate. I hope she likes it!

Two home-grown tomatoes, a Sunday lunch at the City Diner, a visit to a friend with adorable new twins, a long weekend at the lake with the parents - now you're up to date!

A dear friend is moving out of town. So what does a dear friend need? Dinner and a shawl. Knit by several friends.

On Monday, I was short with two folks at the office then lost a spreadsheet with over a week's worth of work in it.
On Tuesday, I had a stand-off with a woman in the middle of the street, then my noon trip to the pool was rained out.
On Wednesday, I cursed the weatherman when I got rained out for my run then the phone went dead.
On Thursday, I cut off an old tourist during my walk then lost a knitting needle.

New technology at our house

Anyone who knows us well knows we are not on the edge of the technology curve. Not in the total still water, but certainly not on the exciting crest.

After much hemming and hawing (a strong point for me - I can out haw the best of them), I bought a new digital camera. I was frustrated with my current wonderful camera because I couldn't get things close enough. From the usual perch of my sofa, the closest I could zoom in on little Wellington was this:

Knitting gifts

As much as I enjoy making things for myself, I love knitting gifts. I get all eager with anticipation to give just-finished socks, sweet rolling brim baby hats, a freshly blocked shawl. I certainly get nervous because I want them to love the gift as much as I do. And somehow convey that they are indeed special to me as they have been on my mind for hours and hours as I've delightfully knitted as well as told dozens of fellow knitters about my project. Fellow knitters are always eager to ask about a work in progress.

The latest gift in the works is (hopefully, since I picked the pattern and the yarn and started the project largely without consult) a collective effort of dear friends for another dear friend.

Here's the start.

A few Sunday's ago, after watching Diners, Drive-ins and Dives (gotta love Guy), Robert and I headed off to the Virginia Diner for the lunch buffet.

On the way, we passed THREE cars with an equivalent husband-wife combo - husband driving, wife working a knitting or crochet project. How funny! And inspiring. Having a tall vehicle helps the voyeurism in near-by vehicles. Unfortunately, I did not get the opportunity to chat...

Most days, weather permitting, I take a knitting stroll during my lunch break. Often that includes picking up lunch, for myself and usually at least one co-worker.

Spring has sprung and flora is blooming, so, today I'm taking you along.

Since knitting takes most of my concentration, I prefer to walk in vehicle-free areas. We're headed to Capitol Square.

A new job!

Such exciting news - I'm starting a part-time job at The Yarn Lounge. I could not possibly be more thrilled. Well, unless I didn't have to have a full-time job too, but that's just crazy dreaming.

I start on Thursday, April 3 at 300pm. I work again Saturday, April 5. That is my schedule so far; I'll keep you posted as I get more shifts. With a full-time job and all, they will be few and far between, but anticipated nonetheless.

Please come to visit! (But don't ask me any hard questions in front of the boss.)

From 0 to 60

Well, not exactly 60, but I have started a record number of projects this week.

The first, the swatch for the Drops sweater in Lambs Pride Bulky. I have not used this yarn before - I love it!!! So cushy and lush. Just lovely.

Here is the first rolled brim baby hat in Cotton Ease for the collection of new babies coming this spring. I'm not quite sure why this brim refuses to roll...

Here is one that is cooperatively rolling.

This is A Stork's Nest scarf from the January/February 2008 Piecework magazine in Knit Picks Alpaca Cloud in Peppermint Heather. This is a stash yarn that I've been excited about but failed to find the right project until now.

Here is the first of a pair of socks made from yarn I bought last fall. The nose made a debut in my last post. They are coming along pretty well!

New additions

In a house with few goings-on, little changes and new additions are a big deal!

Most recently, we had Robert's office painted. It's RED!

I know that before-and-after photos can be quite fun, but I forgot about before until after. So here it is in its final state - new prints and new lamp too. It looks quite stunning in person.

A dear friend also brought over a new addition - Wellington's little sister, Sally. She is posing with proud big brother and the feel good bunny.

I've shared that I've been going to PT for a few weeks now with good results. The PT advised me last week to get new running shoes. Here are my stylin' senior citizen shoes. Sadly, the shoes confirm it.

For the first time in several years, I found myself with no active knitting project. Nothing! Admittedly, I do have a few UFOs that are consciously on hold and will remain there for a while longer. But I had NO ACTIVE PROJECTS! I walked to get lunch with empty hands and felt a bit naked. So, announcing the next project - toe up socks with fun yarn purchased in September in Sweden. I'm very fond of them already (and it only took three times to cast on to get it right. So far.).

And as a grand finale, very very happy birthday wishes to Robert's sister Amy. Have a super fun day and weekend!

Feeling better

Exciting developments! One of my knitting friends has written her first pattern! He's a charmer. Here he is posing with Wellington.
His name is The-Feel-Better-Bunny as Robert was recovering from pneumonia while I made the bunny. And my friend needs all the feel better wishes she can get as she suffers through week three (or is it four) with mono.

His little facial features were one of my first attempts at embroidery, so he's a bit of an individual I'd say. He's soft and snuggable - just as a bunny should be.

It's finally Friday!

Promising developments. I went swimming for the first time. In my life, I've spent thousands of hours in the water, but never swimming laps. I just got my first goggles and swimcap through mail order this week and boy, do I look stylin' in them.
PT went well today - the therapist thinks the root of my problem is my shoes/feet. I have another set of exercises and instructions to go shopping for new running shoes.

To the knitting ~

Okay, another bothersome feature of weekdays - it's too dark when I'm home to take photos. So, here is a pic of the Icelandic sweater last weekend - post cutting. Damage done. Scary.

I finished all of the trim - neck, placket, and sleeves, with an attached i-cord. Then I started adding a grosgrain trim (the zipper was a utter failure), then decided to block it before finishing the trim.
I sewed in many, many, many ends.

Here it is drying in the cold sunshine with its attached i-cord trim. It smells a bit sheepy, so I prefer to dry it outside. Still work to do, but she's coming along!
The one downer of the weekend - Robert has been diagnosed with pneumonia. He's feeling okay, but bummed. He's not very good at resting (like someone else I know). I'm going out of town this weekend to visit friends - which I'm very excited about - but I am sad to leave him home sick and alone.

Is the weekend here yet???

The blasted week continues. My dear husband is still sick. The Helsinki trip is still not confirmed. I'm going to PT for my hip. It's going well, so the therapist said to try running again. I did. It felt great! The whole rest of my body was thrilled. I had a rhythym, good energy, high spirits. All good. Until I stopped running. My hip is now angry. Livid, angered, apoplectic, enraged, foaming, fuming, furious, incensed, indignant, inflamed, infuriated, irate, ireful, mad, outraged, rabid, riled, roiled, shirty. Yes, all of these at once. After a mere 1.16 mile run.

Other little bothers are the office continue too. Little, but collectively, a bit more than I want to take in a week.

I do have many things to be grateful for - it is just my hip, not multiple body parts; the husband is sick, but not hospitalized; I do have a job; I do get vacation. And thank goodness, the weekend is coming!

Ugh, Mondays.

My love of weekends is countered by my basic dislike of most weekdays. Sunday evening can sometimes qualify as a weekday. After 5pm becomes a school night.

So, after the Sunday afternoon excitement of finding a great deal and booking our summer vacation to Helsinki, Finland - fun weekend! - the Icelandic sweater became a big behemoth littered with straight pins - unfun school night. The sweater is wonderful (photos coming later), but that zipper, whoa nelly. I realized that I do not know how to put in a zipper. After many pin pricks, I discovered that I wasn't really stitching the zipper and the sweater, more the zipper and fuzz on the edge of the sweater. I'm going to remove the poorly stitched and pinned zipper (mostly pinned, I didn't get far on the stitching) and try it on just open as a jacket. I think it is going to be perfect.

So, Monday. My daily routine was all off from the time I was awakened to hear my cell phone turn itself off at 430am due to my poor recharging routine (downstairs in my office mind you - I'm also poor at volume control). My wonderful husband is sick. The Helsinki reservation fell through. A collection of interruptions meant no productivity at the office (a team is replacing all of the computers - how much of a recipe for disaster is that?!).

I'm trying again with some new dates in Helsinki. That trip is essential for the sweater - I think a single toggle closure may be the grand final touch. And that I may be able to stitch on correctly. And I have a plan for non-computer dependent tasks at the office.

I'm looking forward to a better Tuesday.

What a great end to the week and weekend. Knitted with friends on Thursday evening, then again on Saturday - with the extra special addition of friend's knitter extraordinaire mother, then game night with a friend and some new friends! Oh, and a visit to the yarn shop in between.

How fun to knit something I actually need. While in the kitchen recently, I realized I'm down to four dishrags. I think the average household needs at least a dozen, if not two. So, I pulled out a UFO, made it an FO along with a second. This yarn was a Christmas gift last year - at the time I had no idea how much I needed it. Turned out to be the perfect gift. And how fun is the MDK Ball Band dishcloth! Can't have too many of those. The other cloth is some pattern I stumbled across in a magazine. I'm looking forward to the little scrubby bobbles.And so cheery colorful too! Here they are, a little blurry, posing with the teapot I got for Christmas this year. I absolutely adore it. I just admire it. And use it too. I just love it.

I finished the i-cord bindoff to the neck and bottom of the Icelandic sweater and finished crocheting the reinforcement to prepare for - gulp - the steek. I have to redo the cuffs of the sleeves and sew in many, many ends. That will allow me to procrastinate for a while longer before cutting.
I bought yarn for the next project!
And I did the math and suddenly realized that I need seven baby gifts for five pregnant friends. Here is the yarn for bibs. Or something else if I find a different pattern sooner.
And most of Sunday left to enjoy. What a joy.

Blasted squirrel

So, I’m out for a knitting stroll during lunch. I’m happily working on some socks, admiring the large number of folks in pink and red, and enjoying the sunshine. I’ve broken a cardinal rule of walking knitting – a pattern. Usually the most challenging project involves ribbing – this sock involves a chart. Just knits and purls, but nonetheless, a chart. So I got to the end of a row and I realized I was off. No big deal, just a mere sixteen-stitch stretch. But this was going to take some concentration, so I headed off for a bench.

The State Capitol is brimming with trees, birds, flowers (not this time of year, but usually), and many squirrels. I work in workers’ compensation – I’ve seen a number of claims for squirrel bites. My friend has also spooked me regarding these cute fluffy rodents. Today, I felt like the cat being pursued by Pepe le Peu. This squirrel was all sorts of interested in helping me with my knitting problem. I’d move, he’d follow. I moved again. He followed again. Always getting eye contact with me when I looked his direction. And from a distance of two feet. He was right there! With his soft fur and sharp little teeth. I was getting no stitches corrected.

So, I started walking again to get outside of the Capitol grounds so I could resume work. The little guy trailed me down the sidewalk as he scurried up and down the trees as I walked. A very persistent fellow. Then I realized I lost my stitch marker. Blast. It was a cute beaded one I made. Sure, it had a rough edge that always snagged on the yarn, but it was so cute! So I had to head back into squirrel country retracing my steps. This time I managed to elude my Valentine, but didn’t recover the marker.

I’m sure it will make a lovely Valentine present for a little critter’s sweetheart.

UPDATE: Found the stitch marker in the cuff of my pants. What a bizarre walk. I may stay in tomorrow.

Projects, projects, projects!

Here is the Icelandic sweater to date:
As soon as I figure out how to do an attached i-cord, I'll be ready to cast of and - gulp - steek. I feel well prepared from my tutorial at the Yarn Lounge last weekend. We'll see how long the confidence lasts.

The joys of weekends

A great weekend! Two good workouts, a hard night's sleep, two trips to the yarn store (same one, second time I took a friend), birds finally started enjoying the bird feeder (the zoom on the camera won't get close enough for good photos), lots of knitting, a lazy Sunday afternoon watching recorded television with the SO, a new project on the needles with two more new ones ready for the gun - yippee - how fun is all that!

I finished a pair of socks, but they are a little shy for the camera. They are brown socks but have grey toes because I ran out of yarn. They are fearful the other lovely socks on the web will make fun of them. They are way chunky - KP Swish Superwash - socks only a mother could love.

The new floor!

Photos of the new floor. It is all I wanted - darker, but not too dark, textured enough to be interesting, no seams, and somehow, it actually feels softer. I don't understand why, but I like it. And the transition with the other surfaces - carpet and hard wood - somehow look better too. Good all around.

The blue rug may have a limited life though...

A bevy of activity in the home.

Here's the new pillow I made under the close tutelage of my quilter extraordinaire mother. The fabric doesn't match the room, but I love it.
Here's my new kitchen floor. Yes, that is the foyer. The latest scheduled installation date is tomorrow. Updates to follow.
Here is the Icelandic sweater to date. Very exciting. However, I am unsure if it can become a cardigan at this point. Based on some articles I've read, I should have planned for that earlier. Updates to follow.
And most exciting - here's the SO on the final stretch of the 24th Annual Frostbite 15k (9.3 miles for the English among us). He finished well ahead of his goal at a speedy ~1:08. The official times and photos are not posted yet.

The bird feeder is slowly becoming part of the landscape and after a week, a few birds have shown interest. The first creature to the trough, however...I'm happy someone is enjoying it!

Another lovely state holiday today!

Many options, a very relaxing day. I went to the gym for spinning, knit, caught up on recorded television, shopped a bit, met my parents for lunch, knit some more, napped, then installed a new bird feeder!

Well, first let me share a few photos from the snowstorm that hit the homefront yesterday, but never made it to the office. I simply walked to lunch in cold rain. Very pretty at the house.

With the promise of more snow, I hope the birdies will be happily fed for the event.

I also bought this bright, lovely primrose while shopping for the bird feeder. The whole rack of them was so colorful, I could not resist! Unfortunately, I napped during the remaining daylight hours, so the photo does not reflect its total vibrancy:
The Icelandic sweater is coming along. When I finish the second sleeve, I will join the body with both sleeves then begin the colorwork of the yoke.
With the weekend plus another holiday on Monday, she may be coming together!

Blast!

With much Christmas knitting completed, I'm in search of mobile projects again. The sleeve is one option, but I like to have several options. So I pulled out a sock-in-progress. The first one is done, the second ready for the turning of the heel. I've done some socks, but still need to refer to the pattern. Well, since I worked on the first sock, I've done some tidying. No idea where the pattern is. Searched the stack. No pattern with a heel flap that looks like this one. Clearly tidying is overrated.

I've unearthed some generic sock patterns and think I can make up the rest. They're mine, so they don't have to look the same, but I do prefer they fit similarly.

Crap.

A case of the "I want's"

I have a whole day in front of me. No plans, no commitments. All day. Blissful, but oh so overwhelming. I have so many things I want to do, I'm paralyzed. What to do first? The options are just too numerous.

I face the same challenge with life. So many things I want to do. So many things I must do. All take time. Although I do have all day today, I do not have all day every day to do just what I'd like. I want to knit more. I want to read more. I want to learn to sew. I want to work out more. I want to learn more about web design. I want to visit friends out of town more. I want to visit friends in town more. I want to bake. I want to cook. I want to make cards. I want to write more notes. I want to make an album of our last trip. I want to plan our next trip.

So, between 9:00am and 9:00pm today, what will I do? Will I take a challenging route or sit and knit on an existing project and watch recorded television shows all day? Will I do wants or musts? At the end of the day, will I have flitted to each of my wants and a few musts and accomplished just a little bit on each? Will the household be any better for a productive day of activities?

Bring on the day!

Author's note: Did I mention that I want to do these things in addition to the other activities I am already fortunate to enjoy: knitting by myself, knitting with friends, napping, having afternoon tea, or a beer, depending on the day, visiting with parents, surfing the web.

Forward and back

The mitten yarn is in! What brilliant colors. Mine are pink and brighter pink. AM chose red and green.
I started a swatch in Marta Stina's technique.
Not such a great technique for this knitter. With these little needles (my new Christmas needles!), control is sort of important. With this technique, I've got stitches in multiple sizes. In shapes I've never seen before. Since every pattern stresses gauge, gauge, gauge, I'm thinking that means that one gauge over the course of the project is preferable. In my amateur status (not having my own named, published technique), I'm reverting back to one color in each hand. Having only completed one small, stuffed animal-sized fair isle project, I'm clearly not ready for the specialty method. Writer confession: I do not claim to be a creative writer, so I'll admit I often reach out to available resources. A favorite of mine is merriamwebster.com. Check out the sample sentence for a synonym for "technique."

The knit-along is in a bit of a static status given some birthday knitting and Icelandic sweater knitting. I purchased some 9 dpns to get going on the sleeves. I worked through the patterned cuff at home, then was ready for the endless rows of stockinette for lunchtime walking-knitting. I was strolling and knitting happily, then had a clever thought. Since this is going to be MY sleeve, why not try it on? Blast. Not such a good fit for my wrist. So walking-knitting turned in to walking-unraveling. Ready to re-cast on. Didn't count how many stitches I had so I could figure out the new number. Pattern in the knitting basket at home since I was simply knitting endless rows of stockinette. Blast. Another point for my wonderful husband who pulled out my Icelandic pattern - in English, but with a twist. He patiently read through the Cast on 30(36, 36), K1, P1 for 8cm, switch to 6mm twin pins, inc to 42(48, 48) (since I was changing the ribbed cuff, I needed the increased number). In case you need to know, pins are knitting needles. Twin pins are dpns.

A highlight of the day - I went to see Kate Jacobs, the author of Friday Night Knitting Club at a bookstore in Shockoe Slip last night. Delightful. This is her first novel. The movie rights to the book were purchased by some association with Julia Roberts to produce and star in the movie. Talk about beginner's luck! I'm eager to read it. And I did manage to get the cuff of the Icelandic sweater cast on, again.

Back to real life

Well, the holiday euphoria has diminished a bit. But the house is clean, so there's a new high associated with that. On the knitting front, I finished the first ball on the Icelandic sweater - I'm back to where I was when the frogging started. The stitches are smaller, so I think it's safe to start ball two. Celebrate the small successes.

I am a multiple project knitter, so in that spirit, I am going to start the sleeves even while the body is in progress. It will seem almost like different projects due to the circumference difference. Perhaps even mobile knitting once I get past the wrist detail. I need to get maximum knitting done before the mitten yarn comes in since I can barely keep up with AM even without distractions like a job and an Icelandic sweater and sleeves.

On that note, does anyone have size 9 and/or 10 dpn's I can borrow?

Welcome 2008!

We had a blast of a time on New Year's Eve and have the quintessence of party favors to show for it.
We played with friends, ate, drank, and were merry. We discovered Wii. Wii, oh Wii! Much boxing and bowling. Big fun! And I have the soreness to prove it. Somehow Amy, it does make one a bit tender, even without the eight-pound ball. I think that says something for my lower-body weight routine, but I suppose that goes under "Resolutions."

I welcome in 2008 in a state of euphoria. I've worked a record few number of days since October (up to and including today), knitted more Christmas gifts than ever before, received fabulous gifts, visited lots with friends and family, and have nestled in at home with Robert on several cloudy days and cold nights. I got a teapot for Christmas which has brought a joy to me every afternoon at home since. I enjoy just gazing at it in the cabinet even when I do not have the time to sit for a spot. I handled all of my returns (I think). I have several knitting projects on the needles and yarn coming in the mail.

So, I'm off for a New Year's Day run (for a guilt-free afternoon) in my new running shirt and socks and with my shiny new ipod.

Sweater troubles

The Icelandic sweater took a hit today. This...

became this...Apparently the knit for the fair isle is much tighter than the single knit of the main body. It was growing in not-a-good-way. Whatever the chicken sweater had must have been contagious. You may have been able to hear the frog from here. Sigh.

Tank museum

Earlier in December, on a lovely chilly morning, Robert and I set off to visit the American Armoured Foundation Tank Museum in Danville. A pleasant drive, a long visit viewing many military uniforms, toys, guns, equipment, helmets, and of course, tanks. The museum does not allow flash photography, so some photos are a bit blurry.

While in Danville, I recommend having lunch at Mary's Diner (at the recommendation of the nice lady who worked the gift shop at the museum) - cafeteria-style food and plenty of it. We had a delicious time there.

Dormant projects - they're back!

Christmas knitting - as delightful as it is - put some of my other knitting projects on hold. I made (some still in progress - long story on why, legitimately, we have not exchanged gifts at the office) handwarmers from Last Minute Knitted Gifts for my hair stylist and co-workers - here are a few:

I made socks for my sister-in-law:

I made this Leaf and Acorn shawl for my mother-in-law. Truly my most challenging project to date. This wrap pattern just seemed to made for her; I could not resist making it. I started at the end of August and finished in mid-December. Here it is all pinned down for blocking/drying.
Here it is modeling on the sofa. Cloudy day outside - slow shutter speed inside.In my biased opinion, these photos do not do it justice. Perhaps she will model and send a photo?

So, some stash is coming out of hiding (note the fair isle Icelandic sweater in progress - earlier post) and some projects are getting new life:
This is the Almost Argyle sock pattern from Knit Picks, but I cannot seem to find pattern on their website to link it. Anyway, I started these socks way long ago and they continually get bumped for a more exciting project of the moment. Perhaps this will be their winter.

I am resisting the temptation (so far) to start many new projects at once and am concentrating on these two for now. But I did just place an order for a mitten knit-along with a friend. I can only resist so much. And just to spur on my recent Nordic mitten obsession - look at the new Pieceworks I found while searching for the earlier link! I'll be off to Barnes & Noble promptly on January 15.

And I'm pestering another friend for a sweater knit-along. Okay, maybe just a few new projects in 2008...

I love Saturdays

I love Saturdays. I love all stay-at-home days. Any weekend or holiday day will do. We went to the gym (I love the way that makes the rest of the day guilt-free, no matter how much loafing or eating takes place), ran a few errands (again, guilt-free as long as you were somewhat productive for a little while), then spent all afternoon lazing around. We enjoyed a delicious pork tenderloin from New Braunfels Smokehouse (a fabulous Thanksgiving surprise from Robert's mom) and Christmas leftovers (from my mom's house). After a big 'ol nap, I fixed a pot of tea in my new teapot I got for Christmas - it is SO lovely! - enjoying raspberry green tea that I also received for Christmas. It's been a delightful holiday Saturday.

Fair Isle

On a trip to Iceland in 2004 (or maybe 2005) (which, by the way, is the most stunningly beautiful place I have ever seen), I purchased the makings for a traditional Icelandic sweater. Never mind that I bought an already-knit, in the same color, Iceland sweater on a visit in 2001. I had discovered knitting and I must knit myself one.

So, with my vast experience of fair isle knitting (Wellington's sweater is SO big!), I decided to undertake the task.

I am modifying the bottom edge - replacing the ribbing with a hemmed edge. I have cast on and knit about 10 rows.

Oh, that's my gauge swatch done using the Magic Loop. I'm combining all sorts of techniques in this project. Hope that's not too damning.

It's Christmas at our house!

A bit early, we opened presents! Robert has to work on Christmas Eve and most of Christmas Day, so we're sharing presents on Christmas Eve Eve this year. For Robert, it's an armoured warfare Christmas.
He also got fun gift cards to Moe's and Barnes & Noble. Food and books are always welcome at our house. The other fun food gift is holding out in the fridge - a brisket, ham, and turkey from New Braunfels Smokehouse.

And a special little guy got a handknit sweater (my first Fair Isle project; steeks are frightening). Doesn't Wellington look so handsome!

I received delightful gifts including a new ipod shuffle (so Robert can have his back plus mine's a cooler color), remarkably smooth Knit Picks knitting needles, some running and workout accessories, a necklace that is just so ready for a wonderful pendant waiting in my jewelry box, a lovely lilac shirt, and some other wonderful gifts that I'm sure I'm overlooking.

A delightful morning

It's just one of those wonderful days! No one big exciting event, just many, little happy things.

A sweet note from my charming husband met me when I got up this morning.

A lovely friend started a blog.

A four-day weekend - culminating with one of the most anticipated days of the year!!!

Yes, that is a bag of grapefruit under the tree. I love Rio Star. The sweet guy who writes notes also does the grocery shopping and buys me treats.

Another four-day weekend next week too!

My longest run in many weeks (I'm still enjoying the endorphins from the run - hence the warm and fuzzy post). I'm not sure when I developed such a love of running. Don't get me wrong - they are not all fun. Today was perfect. Cloudy, not too cold, no plans making me hurry, not too much traffic. I was doing long runs on the weekend - 60-100 minutes - then injured myself, so the runs stopped. I missed them terribly! An uninterrupted hour to run, enjoy the scenery, and listen to music. Today was a play run as I ran up in the landscaped mulch beds lining Nuckols Road, pretending I was off running cross-country. The grass and mulch make my body so much happier than running on the pavement. Again, a joy today since I cannot run in the rough like that at 6:00am during the week or I'd twist an ankle.

A day ahead with errands planned, but no rush nor requisite results. And not too many errands.

A $5 Starbucks gift card from the office. What a treat to splurge on a free coffee!!! I'm thinking something with lots of milk and mocha.

If I get confirmation that our Christmas package arrived in Dallas, a delightful day will be even better!

My marathoner

Robert ran in his first marathon this fall and finished in an admirable 3:54! His sister was in DC on business and was able to come down to visit for the weekend and travel all around the race course with me. Here they are pre-race. The race anticipation mounts...
We had camera problems at stops one and two, accidentally left the camera in the car at stop three, then snapped a great photo at stop four - around mile 20. He was looking great!
It was a windy day for a warming blanket...
We then had difficulty getting the attention of the star runner post-race.
